Bamboo Used for Shakuhachi

Here are some examples of bamboo that is being used in the construction of Shakuhachi flutes. It is hard to tell sometimes what you are getting so it is best that you buy from a seller that is willing to truthfully tell you where the bamboo used was procured. The last image is of green Japanese Madake bamboo just removed from the grove and in the beginning stage of becoming a Shakuhachi. It will be years before this bamboo is used. There are many steps that are required in preparing the bamboo to become a Shakuhachi flute. I will have much more on this later.
